Abu al-Qasim Zahir al-Shahami (446–533 AH / 1055–1139 CE) was a Persian hadith scholar, dictation scribe (mustamli), and the foremost transmitter (musnid) of Nishapur and Khurasan in his era, known for works such as Tuhfat 'Id al-Fitr (The Gift of Eid al-Fitr) .
Lineage and Early Life
Zahir ibn Tahir ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yusuf ibn Muhammad ibn al-Marzuban al-Shahami was born on Monday, 14 Dhu al-Hijjah 446 AH in Nishapur . He belonged to an illustrious family of traditionists in the city; his father Tahir arranged extensive hadith auditions for his children, and his brother Abu Bakr Wajih ibn Tahir (d. 541 AH) was likewise a reputable scholar of hadith . Alongside his work as a traditionist and scribe, al-Shahami served professionally as a legal notary and certified witness (min a'yan al-shuhud) .
Education, Teachers, and Students
Al-Shahami received transmissions from many prominent authorities of Khurasan. Among his teachers were Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi, Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri, Abu Sa'd Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Kanjrudhi, Abu Uthman Sa'id ibn Muhammad al-Bahiri, Abu Ya'la al-Sabuni, and Abu Salih Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik al-Mu'adhdhin . He also studied Quranic readings (qira'at) and transmission variants under Abu Sa'd Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Muqri' from the Ghayah of Ibn Mihran .
Owing to his exceptionally elevated chains of transmission (uluww al-isnad), students and scholars traveled widely to hear narrations from him, and he dictated around a thousand hadith assemblies . Among his notable students were the historians and hadith masters Ibn Asakir—who narrated extensively from him—and Abu Sa'd al-Sam'ani, as well as Abu al-Ala al-Hamadhani, Abu Ruh Abd al-Mu'izz al-Harawi, Abu al-Majd Zahir ibn Abi Tahir al-Thaqafi, Abu Ahmad ibn Sukaynah, and his son Abu Mansur Abd al-Khaliq ibn Zahir .
Scholarly Standing and Controversy
Al-Shahami was widely acknowledged as truthful in transmission (saduq) and possessing sound, verified audition records (sahih al-sama') . Among his compiled works was the thematic monograph Tuhfat 'Id al-Fitr, in which he collected legal traditions and festival etiquettes related to the Eid celebration .
He was, however, the subject of sharp censure regarding his laxity in observing the obligatory ritual prayers (yukhillu bi-l-salawat) . Due to this issue, several hadith masters refrained from narrating from him out of scrupulous piety (tawarru'an), while others continued to transmit his reports . When he resolved to travel to Isfahan to dictate hadith, his brother warned him against going, fearing public embarrassment over his prayers; when he arrived in Isfahan, local scholars denounced him and many abandoned his circles . In his defense, al-Shahami stated in Isfahan that he had a valid physical excuse and that he combined his prayers, which scholars such as Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani noted may have been due to urinary incontinence (salas al-bawl) . Al-Sam'ani added that he may have repented and reformed toward the end of his life .
Death
Al-Shahami died in Nishapur on the night of 14 Rabi' al-Akhir 533 AH at the age of eighty-six; another report places his death on 10 Rabi' al-Akhir . He was buried in the Husayn cemetery (Maqbarat al-Husayn) in Nishapur beside his father and brother .
