Awali Malik riwayat Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahami (The Elevated Narrations of Malik: The Transmission of Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahami), also known as Ziyadat Awali Malik, is a hadith tract compiled by the Persian scholar Abu al-Qasim Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahami (d. 533 AH / 1139 CE; also reported as 522 AH) containing supplementary elevated-chain narrations of Imam Malik ibn Anas (d. 179 AH / 795 CE).
Background and Purpose
Al-Shahami studied and received the four-part compilation of elevated narrations (Awali) of Imam Malik assembled by the hadith master Abu Ahmad al-Hakim (Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Hafiz, d. 378 AH), hearing them directly from his teacher Abu Sa'id Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Kanjrudhi. Emulating Abu Ahmad al-Hakim and seeking divine reward, al-Shahami authored a dedicated supplement (zawa'id) comprising elevated-chain traditions of Malik found within his own audition records (masmu'at). He restricted his selection strictly to narrations that matched that same high level of chain elevation ('uluww), omitting anything below that grade, and compiled the work after the onset of old age and physical weakness.
Content and Transmission
The compilation consists of two parts (juz'an) containing hadiths transmitted through chains passing through Malik ibn Anas. Al-Shahami's narrations reach Malik through intermediate authorities such as Abd al-Karim al-Qushayri, Abu Uthman al-Buhayri, and Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Umari, frequently tracing back to Mus'ab ibn Abd Allah al-Zubayri or Qutayba ibn Sa'id from Malik.
The collection was preserved across subsequent generations and cited in transmission indexes (faharis) and hadith repertories, such as Salah al-Din al-Ala'i's Itharat al-fawa'id al-majmu'ah and Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Rudani's Silat al-khalf. Among those who transmitted it from al-Shahami was Fatima bint Sa'd al-Khayr al-Ansariyya, through whom the text descended to later scholars including Muhammad ibn Isma'il Khatib Marda and Zaynab bint al-Kamal.
Publication
The text was edited by Muhammad al-Hajj al-Nasir, with assistance from Muhammad Awwam, al-Hasiniyya Majati Ilmi, and Maryam Mawlula, and published by Dar al-Gharb al-Islami in Beirut (second edition, 1998) as part of a collective edition of various Awali Malik transmissions.
