Wael Hafiz Khalaf, known by the kunya and nisba Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Buhayri, is an Islamic author and text editor known for his pedagogical compilations and critical editions of classical devotional and literary treatises .
Scholarly Approach and Reception
His full name is given as Wael ibn Hafiz ibn Khalaf, bearing the kunya Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman and the regional nisba al-Buhayri . In his ethical compilation al-Muntakhab min Wasaya al-Aba lil-Abna (Selections from Parental Testaments to Children), which was published in Alexandria as an abridgment of a larger comprehensive treatise, he outlined a strict standard of hadith verification, committing to including only authenticated (thābit) prophetic reports while exercising conventional scholarly leniency regarding the chains of non-prophetic ancestral transmissions (āthār) .
In the field of spiritual purification and devotional ethics, he composed Bulugh al-Ghaya min Tahdhib Bidayat al-Hidaya (Attaining the Objective: A Refinement of the Beginning of Guidance), an abridgment and critical refinement of the devotional manual of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali . This work received commendation from the contemporary scholar Sheikh Jamal al-Din Mughazi, who praised his research effort, taught the text following the dawn prayer, and recommended it to students of Islamic knowledge as a practical curriculum for spiritual purification . In addition to ethical manuals, he engaged in modern textual editing, preparing a verified edition of al-Sumuww al-Ruhi al-Aʿzam (The Supreme Spiritual Loftiness) by the literary essayist Mustafa Sadiq al-Rafi'i .
