Abu Abd Allah Mustafa al-Adawi (b. 1945 CE / 1364 AH) is an Egyptian scholar of hadith, Quranic exegesis (tafsir), and jurisprudence (fiqh), known for his educational circles and works such as al-Tashil li-Ta'wil al-Tanzil.
Early Life and Education
Mustafa ibn al-Adawi was born in the village of Munyat Samannud in the Dakahlia Governorate of Egypt in 1945 CE. He studied mechanical engineering at the Faculty of Engineering in 1977 CE and memorized the Quran. He subsequently traveled to Yemen to study traditional Islamic sciences under the hadith scholar Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadi'i, attending his circles from approximately 1400 AH to 1404 AH.
Teaching and Scholarly Activity
Following his return to Egypt, al-Adawi established a small mosque where he began teaching courses covering Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, exegesis, and jurisprudence. As students from Egypt and abroad gathered around his lessons, he established a larger mosque and an expansive research library to accommodate them, and maintained regular weekly lectures across several Egyptian governorates.
His scholarly contributions center on the application of hadith verification to legal and exegetical matters. His writings include al-Sahih al-Musnad min al-Ahadith al-Qudsiyya, a thematic collection devoted to authenticated divine narrations (ahadith qudsiyya), and Jami' Ahkam al-Nisa', a compendium of legal rulings pertaining to women.
Reception
Students who studied under him, including Sharif al-Tshadi, praised his character, forbearance, and pedagogical guidance in hadith verification and the biographical evaluation of narrators (ilm al-rijal).
