Muhammad ibn Talat (fl. 15th century AH / 21st century CE) is an Egyptian hadith researcher and specialist in biographical evaluation (al-jarh wa-al-ta'dil), best known for his reference dictionaries on hadith transmitters.

Biography and Scholarly Work

Muhammad ibn Talat ibn Muhammad is based in al-Mahalla al-Kubra, Egypt. His scholarship focuses on the critical examination of hadith narrators ('ilm al-rijal) and compiling supplementary materials on specialized subfields of transmitter criticism.

In 1425 AH (2004 CE), he published al-Tadhyil ala Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (The Appendix to Tahdhib al-Tahdhib) in Riyadh, in which he collected evaluations of narrator reliability and defectiveness that had been omitted from Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's biographical dictionary Tahdhib al-Tahdhib. Ibn Talat noted that he selectively incorporated assessments that assist in determining a narrator's exact standing, with particular emphasis on fifth-rank transmitters in Ibn Hajar's Taqrib al-Tahdhib over whom early authorities differed regarding reliability.

In the same year, he produced Mu'jam al-Mukhtalitin (Dictionary of Confused Narrators), an alphabetical reference examining transmitters reported to have experienced cognitive deterioration (ikhtilat) or memory alteration in later life. He followed this in 1426 AH (2005 CE) with Mu'jam al-Mudallisin (Dictionary of Obfuscating Narrators), a compendium of transmitters characterized by obfuscation (tadlis), prefacing the biographies with an analysis of the definitions, categories, and hierarchical ranks of tadlis.
