Mu'jam al-Mukhtalitin (Dictionary of the Mixed Narrators) is a biographical reference work in hadith transmitter criticism ('ilm al-rijāl) by Muhammad ibn Tal'at, dedicated to examining narrators reported to have experienced cognitive deterioration (ikhtilāṭ), memory alteration (taghayyur), or impaired retention in late life .

Overview and Objectives

The author compiled the material for the dictionary from foundational biographical works (kutub al-rijāl) produced by early authorities (al-mutaqaddimūn), alongside specialized treatises on ikhtilāṭ composed by later scholars (al-muta'akhkhirūn), such as Abu Bakr al-Hazimi, Salah al-Din al-Ala'i, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, and Burhan al-Din al-Halabi . Ibn Tal'at highlighted that the dictionary gathers critical statements and assessments regarding mukhtaliṭ transmitters that were omitted in earlier monographs on the subject, citing as examples his biographical entries for Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, and Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i .

Methodology and Contents

In his introductory section, Ibn Tal'at addresses the technical definition of ikhtilāṭ, the various causes behind a narrator's cognitive or memory decline—such as senility, blindness, the loss or destruction of written records, severe illness, or traumatic life events—and the evidentiary rulings concerning their narrations . He adopts the classical position that transmissions delivered prior to the onset of confusion are accepted, those delivered afterward are rejected, and cases where the timing cannot be determined remain suspended unless corroborated by reliable transmitters .

The book incorporates every narrator cited in earlier literature on mukhtaliṭūn, regardless of whether the attribution of ikhtilāṭ is deemed authentic upon detailed critical verification . The author notes that several figures had been included in earlier works due to non-technical usages of related terminology; for instance, early critics occasionally described a transmitter as mukhalliṭ (conflating or erratic in memory across chains and texts), which subsequent compilers mistakenly conflated with technical late-life ikhtilāṭ .

Publication

Mu'jam al-Mukhtalitin was published in a single volume by Adwa' al-Salaf in Riyadh, with its first edition issued in 1425 AH (2004/2005 CE) . It serves as a companion to Ibn Tal'at's biographical dictionary on transmitters suspected of misrepresentation in hadith transmission (tadlīs), titled Mu'jam al-Mudallisin, published by the same house in 1426 AH .
