al-Tadhyil ala Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (The Appendix to Tahdhib al-Tahdhib) is a biographical evaluation work on hadith transmitters compiled by Muhammad ibn Talat (also referred to as Muhammad Talat) .
Purpose and Scope
The work serves as a supplement (tadhyil) to Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's biographical dictionary Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, gathering evaluations in impunging and endorsing hadith transmitters (al-jarh wa-al-ta'dil) that Ibn Hajar did not include in his original work . These additional statements consist of scholarly appraisals that Ibn Hajar may have omitted deliberately for specific reasons or that he did not encounter .
Methodology
In the introduction to the book, the author clarified that he did not commit himself to listing every omitted statement left out by Ibn Hajar . Instead, he restricted his selection to those assessments he deemed beneficial for determining a transmitter's degree of reliability . He paid special attention to recording supplementary critical remarks in the biographies of transmitters categorized in the fifth rank of Ibn Hajar's Taqrib al-Tahdhib, on account of the disputes among the leading scholars concerning them, where some critics declare their reports sound and others deem them weak .
Publication
The work was published in a first edition in 1425 AH (2004 CE) by Maktabat Adwa al-Salaf in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia .
