His ancestry traces back to Salim, the son of the companion Umar ibn al-Khattab . His family originated from Jamma'il in Palestine before settling in the al-Salihiyya neighborhood at the foot of Mount Qasyun in Damascus . He was born in the month of Rajab; while 705 AH is widely cited, biographers also recorded 704 AH and 706 AH as variant birth dates .

Education and Career

Ibn Abd al-Hadi studied Quranic recitations and attended numerous hadith transmissions from prominent Syrian scholars, including Sulayman ibn Hamza, Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Da'im, Isa al-Mut'im, Ahmad ibn Abi Talib al-Hajjar, and Zaynab bint al-Kamal . He studied Hanbali jurisprudence under Muhammad ibn Muslim and Majd al-Din al-Harrani, and Arabic grammar under Abu al-Abbas al-Andarashi . He closely attached himself to Ibn Taymiyya, with whom he read theological texts, and to al-Mizzi, developing deep expertise in biographical evaluation and hadith defects (ilal) .

He taught at the Sadriyya and Ghiyathiyya madrasas in Damascus, issued legal rulings, and instructed students such as Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi and Muhammad ibn al-Muhibb al-Samit . He later resigned from his madrasa teaching appointments to dedicate his time fully to writing and scholarly research . Senior contemporaries held Ibn Abd al-Hadi in high regard despite his early demise. Al-Dhahabi described him as a versatile scholar, master hafiz, and expert grammarian, noting that he transmitted from him and benefited from his insights . Al-Mizzi remarked that he never met Ibn Abd al-Hadi without gaining knowledge from him, and he would accept corrections from him regarding biographical details of narrators . Khalil ibn Aybak al-Safadi noted his rapid recall in linguistic and literary inquiries, comparing his answers to a torrential stream, while Ibn Kathir praised his command over hadith criticism, narrator defects, and adherence to the methodology of the early generations .

Illness and Death

Ibn Abd al-Hadi fell ill for nearly three months with an internal ulcer, fever, and severe diarrhea that progressively weakened him . He died before reaching the age of forty on Wednesday, 10 Jumada al-Ula 744 AH (1343 CE), just before the afternoon prayer . His father reported that his final words were the two testimonies of faith followed by the prayer: اللَّهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين ("O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and make me among those who purify themselves") . His funeral took place on Thursday morning at the Muzaffari Mosque, attended by judges, scholars, state officials, and townspeople, and he was buried at the Rawda cemetery near Mount Qasyun beside Sayf ibn al-Majd .
