Ta'liqa ala al-Ilal li-Ibn Abi Hatim (Glosses on the Hidden Defects of Ibn Abi Hatim) is a work of hadith criticism and defect analysis (ilal) by the Hanbali scholar Ibn Abd al-Hadi (704/705–744 AH / 1304/1305–1343 CE), commenting on Kitab al-Ilal by Ibn Abi Hatim al-Razi (240–327 AH / 854–938 CE) .

Scope and Composition

Ibn Abd al-Hadi undertook the work as an expansive critical commentary on Ibn Abi Hatim's jurisprudence-ordered compilation of hadith defects, but he died before bringing it to completion . As noted by al-Sakhawi, Ibn Abd al-Hadi authored a single volume that covered only an initial fraction of the original book before his death . The surviving text corresponds to the opening sections of the work, focusing primarily on issues related to ritual purity (Kitab al-Taharah) .

Methodology and Content

In the commentary, Ibn Abd al-Hadi examines the specific queries and defect judgements recorded by Ibn Abi Hatim from his father Abu Hatim al-Razi and from Abu Zur'ah al-Razi . His analysis includes:

  • Tracing transmission lines and corroboration: He tracks parallel transmission lines, cites corroborating narrations (mutaba'at), and identifies whether particular traditions were transmitted across the major hadith collections .
  • Narrator identification and appraisal: He clarifies transmitter identities and patronymics (such as demonstrating that Abu Rafi' is identical to Abd Allah ibn Rafi', the client of Umm Salamah) and assesses their status using biographical sources such as Ibn Hibban's Kitab al-Thiqat .
  • Critical evaluation and comparison: He weighs the judgements of Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah against those of other prominent critics, such as al-Daraqutni, at times arguing against the verdicts of Abu Hatim or Abu Zur'ah in favor of alternative assessments .

Textual Value and Editions

Because the commentary reproduces and discusses the source text in detail, editors of Ibn Abi Hatim's Kitab al-Ilal rely on Ibn Abd al-Hadi's manuscript transmission as an important textual witness to correct scribal errors, textual corruptions (tashif), and lacunae (saqt) in surviving manuscripts .

The work has been published in modern print, edited by Sami ibn Muhammad ibn Jad Allah and published by Dar Adwa' al-Salaf (1423 AH) .
