Abu al-Tahir al-Dhahli (279–367 AH / 893–978 CE) was an Iraqi-born Maliki jurist, hadith transmitter, and chief judge of Egypt . He was noted for his extensive hadith transmissions and his judicial career spanning Baghdad, Damascus, and Egypt .
Lineage and Early Life
Abu al-Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Nasr ibn Bujayr ibn Salih ibn Abd Allah ibn Usama al-Dhahli al-Sadusi belonged to a distinguished family of scholars and judges originally from Basra and established in Baghdad . His father, Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Dhahli, served as judge over Basra and Wasit . Al-Dhahli was born in Baghdad in Dhu al-Hijjah 279 AH (or 280 AH according to another account) . His father oversaw his early education, bringing him to hear hadith in 287 AH when he was around eight or nine years old, enabling him to meet leading elder traditionists, including Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ibrahim al-Harbi .
Education and Hadith Transmission
Al-Dhahli studied under numerous prominent scholars of Iraq, including Abu Muslim al-Kajji, Bishr ibn Musa al-Asadi, Abu Shu'ayb al-Harrani, Yusuf ibn Ya'qub al-Qadi, Abu Khalifa al-Fadl ibn al-Hubab, Musa ibn Harun al-Hammal, Jafar ibn Muhammad al-Firyabi, and the grammarian Abu al-Abbas Tha'lab .
Among his students who transmitted from him were al-Daraqutni, Abd al-Ghani ibn Sa'id, Tammam al-Razi, Abu al-Hasan al-Qabisi, and Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Taffal, who was the last surviving narrator to transmit directly from him . Al-Daraqutni selected approximately one hundred fascicles (ajza') from al-Dhahli's transmissions, and the total corpus copied from him reached around two hundred parts . In addition to hadith, he transmitted literary texts such as Tabaqat al-Shu'ara' by Ibn Sallam al-Jumahi via Abu Khalifa al-Jumahi, and authored abridgments of the Quranic commentaries of Abu Ali al-Jubba'i and Abu al-Qasim al-Balkhi .
Judicial Career and Trials
Al-Dhahli began his judicial activity by deputizing for his father in Basra in 294 AH, and later assumed the judgeship of Wasit . During his tenure in Wasit, he endured severe hardship and persecution during the political ascendancy of the military commander Bajkam, barely escaping death . Later in Baghdad, he served as judge of Madinat al-Mansur for about four months in 329 AH, and judge of eastern Baghdad under Caliph al-Mustakfi in 334 AH for about five months .
Appointed judge of Damascus on behalf of Caliph al-Muti', he presided there for nine years until local opposition arose against him, resulting in complaints and his dismissal . He traveled to Egypt in 340 AH, performed the pilgrimage, and returned to be appointed chief judge of Egypt in 348 AH under the Ikhshidid ruler Kafur . He was noted alongside Yahya ibn Aktham as one of only two judges to hold the judiciary of both Baghdad and Egypt .
Following the Fatimid conquest of Egypt in 358 AH, the commander Jawhar al-Siqilli retained al-Dhahli in office, mandating that he apply Fatimid legal rulings specifically regarding inheritance, divorce, and the sighting of the new moon . After the arrival of Caliph al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah, al-Dhahli was confirmed in office and paired in the judgeship with Ali ibn al-Nu'man .
Scholarly Standing and Death
Al-Dhahli was regarded as a trustworthy (thiqah) and reliable hadith authority, an evaluation explicitly endorsed by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi . Chroniclers praised his breadth of knowledge, dialectical skill, and upright conduct during his judicial tenure in Egypt .
In his later years, al-Dhahli was afflicted with hemiplegia (falij) and advanced age, leading to his retirement from judicial duties around 360 AH . He remained in Egypt until his death on the final day of 367 AH (or at the end of Dhu al-Qa'dah of that year according to another report) .
