al-Juz 13 min Hadith Abi al-Tahir al-Dhuhli Intiqa al-Daraqutni (The Thirteenth Part from the Hadith of Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhli, Selected by al-Daraqutni) is a short hadith compilation (juz') containing ten selected narrations transmitted by the Baghdadi Maliki judge and scholar Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhli (279–367 AH / 892–977 CE), chosen and excerpted by the hadith master al-Daraqutni (d. 385 AH / 995 CE) .

Background and Selection

Abu al-Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Nasr al-Dhuhli was a judge who served in Baghdad, Wasit, Damascus, and Egypt . While in Egypt, numerous prominent hadith scholars attended his gatherings and recorded his transmissions . al-Daraqutni heard hadith directly from al-Dhuhli and compiled selections (intiqa') from his extensive foundational books (al-usul), excerpting approximately one hundred parts (ajza') from his narrations .

The full formal title appearing at the head of the manuscript is Ashrat Ahadith Muntakhabah min al-Juz al-Thalith Ashar min al-Fawa'id al-Muntaqat min al-Usul min Hadith al-Qadi Abi al-Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Nasr ibn Bujayr ibn Abd Allah al-Dhuhli: Intiqa al-Hafiz Abi al-Hasan Ali ibn Umar ibn Mahdi al-Daraqutni lahu ("Ten Selected Hadiths from the Thirteenth Part of the Benefits Chosen from the Original Transmissions of Hadith of Judge Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhli, Selected for Him by al-Daraqutni") .

Contents and Transmission

The text preserves a concise collection of numbered prophetic traditions transmitted by al-Dhuhli through several of his notable Baghdadi and regional shaykhs, including Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Marwazi, Musa ibn Harun, al-Husayn ibn al-Kumayt, Muhammad ibn Abdus, and Abu Imran Musa ibn Sahl al-Juwayni .

The narrations cover diverse legal, creedal, and historical topics, including:

  • The questioning of the Prophet ﷺ by a bedouin regarding the pillars of Islam (prayer, zakat, fasting, and pilgrimage) via Anas ibn Malik .
  • A report regarding the companions who remained steadfast around the Prophet ﷺ at the Battle of Uhud via Ibn Abbas .
  • Judgments relating to the siege of the Banu Qurayzah via Atiyyah al-Qurazi .
  • Traditions concerning travel etiquette, fasting while in a state of ritual impurity (janabah), divine enablement for good deeds before death, and supplications in times of distress (du'a al-karb) .

The surviving transmission line of the collection was documented through prominent Levantine scholars, reaching Abu al-Barakat al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Hibat Allah ibn Asakir (who read it in Jumada al-Ula 621 AH) from Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Darani (in 556 AH), from Sahl ibn Bishr al-Isfarayini (in 490 AH), from Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Suddi (in 469 AH), directly from Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhli .
