al-Juz 23 min Hadith Abi al-Tahir al-Dhuhali Intiqa al-Daraqutni (The 23rd Fascicle from the Hadith of Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhali, Selected by al-Daraqutni) is a specialized hadith tract comprising narrations transmitted by the judge Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhali (279–367 AH / 892–977 CE) that were selected and curated by the hadith scholar al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) .

Background and Selection

The primary transmitter of the collection, Abu al-Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Nasr al-Dhuhali al-Baghdadi, was a Maliki jurist and chief judge of Egypt who belonged to an established scholarly family in Baghdad . During al-Daraqutni’s stay in Egypt, he transcribed hadith from Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhali and selected around one hundred fascicles (ajza') from his extensive collection of transmissions .

The twenty-third part forms one preserved section of this multi-part selection, containing narrations transmitted by Abu al-Tahir from his teachers—a circle that included leading Baghdadi authorities such as Bishr ibn Musa al-Asadi, Musa ibn Harun, and Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Firyabi .

Transmission

The transmission lines (asānīd) for the twenty-third and twenty-fifth parts of the collection were recorded by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his bibliography al-Mu'jam al-mufahras . Ibn Hajar traced his chain through Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr al-Maqdisi via Sulayman ibn Hamza, from al-Muslim ibn Ahmad ibn Ali al-Nusaybi al-Mazini, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Darani, from Sahl ibn Bishr, from Abu al-Qasim Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Farisi, directly from Abu al-Tahir al-Dhuhali .

Publication

The tract was edited by Hamdi Abd al-Majid al-Salafi and published in Kuwait by Dar al-Khulafa' lil-Kitab al-Islami (1st edition, 1406 AH / 1986 CE) .
