Academic Career and Scholarship
Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad bin Ali Al Abd al-Latif served as a faculty member and assistant professor in the Department of Creed and Contemporary Doctrines within the College of Usul al-Din at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University. His scholarship centers on Sunni creed, comparative sects, and polemics. Among his major studies is Da'awi al-Munawi'in li-Da'wat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab ("The Claims of Opponents to the Call of Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab"), in which he systematically presents and responds to theological and historical criticisms raised against the Najdi reform movement. He also authored Munazarat Ibn Taymiyya li-Ahl al-Milal wa-al-Nihal ("The Debates of Ibn Taymiyya with the Adherents of Religions and Sects"), compiling and annotating disputations conducted by Ibn Taymiyya against various groups.
He has also published research papers and doctrinal essays in periodicals such as Majallat al-Bayan, examining issues such as the rules of declaring apostasy (takfir), the theological concept of servitude (ubudiyyah), and the theological creed promulgated during the reign of the Abbasid caliph al-Qadir bi-Allah.
Reception and Debates
His published articles on the doctrine of leadership (imamah) and the scope of obedience to rulers—including discussions on tyrannical governance and the limits of political allegiance—became the subject of critical rejoinders by other contemporary Saudi scholars, such as Abd al-Aziz al-Rayyis, who challenged his positions on state authority and political obedience.
