Wa-La Taqrabu al-Fawahish (Do Not Approach Immoralities) is an Islamic treatise authored by Abu Muhammad Jamal bin Abd al-Rahman Ismail examining prohibited sexual transgressions, their individual and societal harms, and the preventive and remedial measures provided in Islamic law .
Purpose and Scope
The title of the book is drawn from the Quranic verse وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ ("And do not approach immoralities—what is apparent of them and what is concealed") [al-An'am: 151], emphasizing prohibition not only of the acts themselves but also of approaching any means that lead to them . The author composed the work to address the protection of honor and modesty, which he describes as holding a primary position among the five essential necessities (al-daruriyyat al-khams) immediately following religion .
The work covers several categories of sexual sins and prohibitions, including fornication and adultery (zina), sodomy (liwat), female homosexual acts (sihaq), anal intercourse with women, intercourse during menstruation, bestiality, and masturbation . The author structures the discussion by beginning with the most severe transgressions, opening with fornication and adultery, followed by sodomy .
Methodology and Content
The author relies primarily on evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah, the consensus of early scholars (ijma' al-salaf), and transmitted statements of the early generations . For each transgression, the work outlines its causes, legal penalties, religious consequences, and practical treatments and safeguards .
In addition to traditional legal and moral arguments, the book incorporates contemporary medical viewpoints detailing the physical ailments and venereal diseases associated with sexual transgressions; these medical reports were supplied by Dr. Ahmad Abd al-Hamid Nada, a specialist in urology and venereal diseases at Ajyad Hospital in Mecca .
