Turuq Hadith Man Kadhaba ‘Alayya Muta‘ammidan (The Transmission Routes of the Hadith "Whoever Intentionally Lies About Me") is a specialized hadith monograph by the hadith master al-Tabarani (260–360 AH / 873–971 CE), devoted to gathering the diverse transmission chains (turuq) of the famous prophetic warning against fabricating sayings attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
Scope and Contents
The monograph compiles the various paths of transmission for the widespread tradition in which the Prophet ﷺ stated: من كذب عليَّ متعمداً فليتبوأ مقعده من النار ("Whoever intentionally lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire"), alongside related narrations warning against false attribution to him .
Al-Tabarani arranges the narrations under the Companions who transmitted them, documenting their full isnads and textual variants. Among the Companions whose narrations are recorded in the work are:
- Abu Bakr al-Siddiq
- Umar ibn al-Khattab
- Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
- Abu Sa'id al-Khudri
- Abu Umama al-Bahili
- Abu Qatada al-Ansari
- Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan
- al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid
- Sa'd ibn al-Midhas
- Utba ibn Ghazwan
- al-'Urs ibn 'Amira
- Nubit ibn Sharit
- Jabir ibn Abdillah
- Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah, Abu Qirsafa, and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari
The compilation extends to well over a hundred individual numbered chains across its sections, documenting both strong and weak lines of transmission .
Scholarly Context
Compiling the transmission paths of this specific hadith was a recognized enterprise among classical hadith scholars to demonstrate its mass transmission (tawatur). Early scholars who collected its chains included Ali ibn al-Madini, Ya'qub ibn Shayba (who cited twenty routes from the Companions), Ibrahim al-Harbi and Abu Bakr al-Bazzar (both citing forty Companions), and Abu Muhammad Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id . Al-Tabarani's compilation expanded upon these earlier works, gathering transmissions from more than sixty Companions . The book has served as an essential primary reference for later traditionists in their verification and takhrij of the narration's isnads .
