Taysir al-Allam Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam (Arabic: تيسير العلام شرح عمدة الأحكام, lit. 'Facilitation of the All-Knowing: Commentary on the Pillar of Rulings') is a contemporary legal hadith commentary by the Saudi jurist Abdullah al-Bassam (d. 1423 AH / 2002 CE) explaining Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi's hadith collection Umdat al-Ahkam .
Method and Content
The work provides a systematic legal exposition of the hadiths compiled in Umdat al-Ahkam . In treating each narration, al-Bassam follows a structured pedagogical sequence:
- Clarification of difficult or uncommon vocabulary (gharib al-hadith) .
- Summary of the general overall meaning of the text (al-ma'na al-ijmali) .
- Enumeration of the derived legal rulings and practical benefits (ma yu'khadh min al-hadith) .
- Examination of controversial juristic issues (al-masa'il al-khilafiyyah), stating the differing scholarly positions along with their arguments and attributions, followed by legal preference (tarjih) .
Throughout the commentary, al-Bassam frequently transmits and relies upon the assessments of Ibn Taymiyyah, earlier Salafi authorities, and contemporary scholars . A dominant feature of the book is its emphasis on addressing modern scenarios that people encounter in daily life, while avoiding obsolete or hypothetical juristic debates .
Reception and Editions
Taysir al-Allam is widely regarded as one of the most popular and circulated modern commentaries on Umdat al-Ahkam . Because of its clarity, structured arrangement, and accessible style, it was widely adopted for teaching hadith in academic institutions and study circles in mosques .
The work has been published in multiple two-volume editions, including an early third edition in 1393 AH, and was later edited and annotated by Muhammad Subhi Hasan Hallaq .
