Abdullah al-Bassam (1346–1423 AH / 1927–2003 CE) was a Saudi Hanbali jurist, judge, and hadith commentator from Unayzah, best known for his legal commentary Taysir al-Allam Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam.

Lineage and early education

He was Abu Abd al-Rahman Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Salih ibn Hamad ibn Muhammad ibn Hamad al-Bassam, belonging to the Al Bassam family of Unayzah in al-Qasim, where he was born in 1346 AH. He began his early schooling in the kuttab of Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Qar'awi to memorize the Quran. Following al-Qar'awi's departure from Unayzah to southern Saudi Arabia, al-Bassam continued his studies alongside his brother Salih under their father, who taught them Quranic interpretation through the commentary of Ibn Kathir, Islamic history through al-Bidayah wa-al-Nihayah, Hanbali jurisprudence through Ibn Balban's Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat, and Arabic grammar through al-Ajrumiyyah. He subsequently became a regular student of the prominent Hanbali jurist Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sa'di in Unayzah.

Higher education and career

Al-Bassam enrolled in Dar al-Tawhid in Ta'if under the directorship of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Mani', where he completed his secondary education. He then relocated to Mecca to study at the College of Sharia and the College of Arabic Language, graduating in 1374 AH.

Following his graduation, he was appointed to the judiciary, serving as a judge in the Third Summary Court and eventually rising to become the president of the Court of Cassation for the Western Province. In addition to his judicial responsibilities, he served as an official instructor at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and was appointed a member of both the Council of Senior Scholars of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Fiqh Academy.

Students and scholarship

Al-Bassam taught numerous students across his teaching circles and judicial career, including Abd al-Aziz al-Musnad, Salih al-Ali al-Nasir, Abd al-Aziz al-Rabi'ah, Muhammad al-Salih al-Murshid, Abdullah al-Khuzaym, and Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd al-Muhsin Al al-Shaykh.

His scholarly writing centered heavily on legal hadith exposition and regional biographical history. In his commentary Taysir al-Allam Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam, he adopted a systematic pedagogy that detailed rare vocabulary, summarized general textual meanings, extracted legal rulings, and presented differing juristic positions and their evidence with an emphasis on modern issues. He also produced an extensive commentary on Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's hadith collection titled Tawdih al-Ahkam min Bulugh al-Maram, as well as a multi-volume biographical work on regional scholars titled Ulama Najd khilal thamanat qurun.
