Tanbihat ala Tahrifat wa Tashifat fi Kitab Majma al-Zawaid wa Manba al-Fawaid (Notices on Corruptions and Misspellings in the Book Majma' al-Zawa'id wa-Manba' al-Fawa'id) is a specialized hadith treatise by Asim ibn Abdullah ibn Ibrahim, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Hadith Studies at the Islamic University of Madinah, dedicated to correcting textual distortions (tahrif) and scribal misspellings (tashif) in narrator names within the printed edition of Nur al-Din al-Haythami's (d. 807 AH / 1405 CE) major hadith collection Majma al-Zawaid wa-Manba al-Fawaid.

Background and Purpose

Al-Haythami's Majma' al-Zawa'id gathers the unique traditions added beyond the six canonical books by Musnad Ahmad, the Musnad of Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili, the Musnad of al-Bazzar, and the three Mu'jam collections (al-Kabir, al-Awsat, and al-Saghir) of al-Tabarani, omitting their isnads while evaluating narrator reliability and chain authenticity. Emphasizing the standing of al-Haythami—whom his student Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani praised as an authoritative traditionalist and memorizer—the author prepared the work to identify errors and corruptions that entered the names of transmitters (al-rijal) in the printed text of the collection.

Structure and Method

The work comprises seventy-seven numbered critical corrections organized alphabetically by the initial Arabic letter of the transmitter's given name (from al-Alif to al-Ya'), concluding with a dedicated chapter for patronymics and agnomens (al-kuna).

In each entry, the author cites the erroneous name as printed in Majma' al-Zawa'id along with its volume and page number, followed by the rectified reading supported by source evidence. To establish correct forms, the author relies on several methodological comparative steps:

  • Cross-referencing other parts of Majma' al-Zawa'id where al-Haythami recorded the same narrator correctly.
  • Consulting al-Haythami's other zawa'id compilations, such as Kashf al-Astar 'an Zawa'id al-Bazzar and manuscripts of Majma' al-Bahrayn fi Zawa'id al-Mu'jamayn.
  • Checking manuscript copies, including reproductions of Majma' al-Zawa'id preserved at the Islamic University of Madinah and manuscript copies of primary sources such as Musnad Abi Ya'la.
  • Referring to classical biographical and orthographical dictionaries (kutub al-rijal wa-l-mushtabah), such as al-Dhahabi's Mizan al-I'tidal and al-Mushtabah, Ibn Hajar's Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, Taqrib al-Tahdhib, Lisan al-Mizan, and Ta'jil al-Manfa'a, and Ibn Abi Hatim's al-Jarh wa-l-Ta'dil.
  • Utilizing modern critical hadith evaluations, particularly takhrij studies by his teacher Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani in works like Irwa' al-Ghalil and Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Da'ifah.

Publication

The study was initially published as an academic paper in the Journal of the Islamic University of Madinah (Majallat al-Jami'ah al-Islamiyyah bi-l-Madinah al-Munawwarah), and was subsequently issued as an independent book, including a second edition published by Dar al-Hijrah in al-Thuqbah, Saudi Arabia (1415 AH).
