Tahbir al-Waraqat bi Sharh al-Thulathiyat (Inking the Leaves: A Commentary on the Three-Narrator Chains) is a concise hadith commentary by Abu Wada'ah Walid ibn Subhi al-Sa'idi on the thulathiyat (traditions possessing three-tier chains of transmission) in Sahih al-Bukhari .
Background and Purpose
In his preface, the author describes the work as a concise explanation of the highest chains of transmission recorded by al-Bukhari in his Sahih . Noting that these three-narrator hadiths are dispersed across various topical books of Sahih al-Bukhari rather than collected in a single chapter, al-Sa'idi opted to extract and rearrange them systematically by the musnad (corpus) of each narrating Companion to facilitate their study and comprehension .
Structure
The book is structured into an introduction, three main parts (abwab), and a conclusion :
-
Part One: Preliminary studies serving as an introduction, organized into six sections:
- The significance and value of the isnad (chain of transmission) in Islam .
- Etiquette and virtues for students of Islamic knowledge .
- A biographical profile of al-Bukhari .
- A listing of the thulathiyat according to their original order in Sahih al-Bukhari .
- The author's connected chain of transmission (sanad) through which the thulathiyat reached him .
- A survey of classical and later treatises compiled on the thulathiyat of al-Bukhari .
-
Part Two: The core commentary on the twenty-two three-narrator hadiths, distributed across the musnads of three Companions :
- Musnad Salama ibn al-Akwa': Comprises seventeen hadiths, all narrated from Salama by Yazid ibn Abi 'Ubayd, and from Yazid by two of al-Bukhari's direct teachers—al-Makki ibn Ibrahim (eleven hadiths) and Abu 'Asim al-Nabil al-Dahhak ibn Makhlad (the remaining six) .
- Musnad Anas ibn Malik: Comprises four hadiths, three transmitted via Humayd al-Tawil concerning the account of al-Rubayyi' (narrated from him by Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ansari), and one transmitted via 'Isa ibn Tahman through Khallad ibn Yahya .
- Musnad 'Abd Allah ibn Busr: Comprises a single hadith, narrated from him by Hariz ibn 'Uthman and from Hariz by 'Isam ibn Khalid .
-
Part Three: Related narrations connected to the thulathiyat recorded elsewhere in Sahih al-Bukhari and in al-Bukhari's al-Adab al-Mufrad .
Method and Sources
At the beginning of each musnad, the author provides concise biographical notices for the transmitting Companion, the Successor (tabi'i), and al-Bukhari's direct shaykh, drawing these biographies primarily from biographical works such as Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' of al-Dhahabi and Tahdhib al-Kamal or Tahdhib al-Tahdhib . For each tradition, al-Sa'idi indicates where al-Bukhari recorded it within his collection, provides an explanation of its general meaning, explores the legal and doctrinal rulings (al-masa'il) derived from the text, and concludes with extracted scholarly benefits (al-fawa'id) .
