Tafsir Surat al-Hujurat (Exegesis of Surah al-Hujurat) is a Quranic commentary delivered as a series of lectures by the Medina-based scholar Atiyya Muhammad Salim (1346–1420 AH / 1927–1999 CE), focusing on the interpretation and themes of chapter 49 of the Quran (Surat al-Hujurat).
Background and Context
The commentary originated within the scholarly study circles (halaqat) held by Atiyya Salim at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. Following the founding of the Islamic University of Medina, a teaching chair was established on behalf of the university at the Prophet's Mosque. Instruction at the chair originally alternated between Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti and Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz. Due to health issues affecting al-Shinqiti and heavy administrative commitments on the part of Ibn Baz, their duties were assumed respectively by Abd al-Qadir Shaybah al-Hamd and Atiyya Salim.
When Abd al-Qadir Shaybah al-Hamd relocated to Riyadh, Atiyya Salim assumed sole responsibility for teaching at the university chair in the Prophet's Mosque, before being joined in later years by Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hudhayfi. Among the exegetical subjects he delivered to students at his circle were dedicated lessons on Surat al-Hujurat, alongside lessons on the opening verses of Surah al-Baqara and select passages from Surah Al Imran.
