Tafsir al-Uthaymin: Ya-Sin (تفسير العثيمين: يس) is a contemporary Quranic commentary on Surah Ya-Sin by the Saudi scholar Ibn Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) .

Origin and Publication

The work originated as a series of regular teaching sessions delivered by Ibn Uthaymin at the Grand Mosque in Unayzah . Following his death, the Scientific Committee at the Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation commissioned Fahd ibn Nasir ibn Ibrahim al-Sulayman to prepare the transcript for publication and verify the attributions (takhrij) of its prophetic traditions and narrations . The book was published in Riyadh by Dar al-Thurayya, appearing in a first edition and a second edition in 1424 AH (2003 CE) under the foundation's supervision .

Method and Scope

The commentary covers the eighty-three verses of Surah Ya-Sin, addressing their linguistic meanings, grammatical structure, and theological implications . Ibn Uthaymin utilizes the concise classical exegesis Tafsir al-Jalalayn by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH) as a base text, placing al-Mahalli's phrasing in brackets before expanding upon it, evaluating differing scholarly opinions, and resolving interpretive questions .

The work examines technical aspects of the Quranic text, including discussions on whether the surah is Meccan or Medinan—defining Meccan revelation as that which was revealed prior to the Hijrah—and the status of specific verses such as verse 47 . Throughout the commentary, Ibn Uthaymin systematically derives legal, theological, and practical deductions (fawa'id) from each verse, analyzing topics such as eschatology, the punishment and bliss of the grave, and the evidence of divine omnipotence presented across the surah .
