Tafsir al-Uthaymin: Sad (Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim: Surat Sad) is an exegetical commentary on Surah Sad by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) .
Origin and Composition
The commentary originated as oral lectures delivered by Ibn Uthaymin during his regular teaching circles at the Grand Mosque in the city of Unaizah . Following his death, the Shaykh Muhammad bin Saleh Al-Uthaymeen Charitable Foundation oversaw the transcription and preparation of the recorded audio lessons for print, commissioning Fahd ibn Nasir ibn Ibrahim al-Sulayman to edit the text and verify its citations and hadiths .
Method and Structure
The work is structured as a running commentary that takes Tafsir al-Jalalayn—specifically the portions authored by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH)—as its base text . Ibn Uthaymin begins by reciting al-Mahalli's concise glosses on the verses and then provides an expansive analysis of their linguistic, theological, and jurisprudential implications .
Following the explanation of each verse or passage, he appends a dedicated section enumerating the derived benefits and rulings (al-fawa'id), extracting legal, creedal, and moral lessons from the Quranic wording . His commentary addresses classical interpretive issues within the surah, such as the classification of Meccan and Medinan revelation, the grammatical syntax of the opening formula, the significance of isolated opening letters (al-huruf al-muqatta'ah), and the theological interpretation of divine attributes .
Publication
The work was published in a single volume in Riyadh by Dar al-Thurayya for Publishing and Distribution under the supervision of the Shaykh Muhammad bin Saleh Al-Uthaymeen Charitable Foundation, with its first edition appearing in 1425 AH / 2004 CE .
