Tafsir al-Uthaymin: min Juz Qad Sami'a wa Tabarak (Tafsir of al-Uthaymin: From the Sections "Qad Sami'a" and "Tabarak") is a multi-surah Quranic commentary by the Saudi Hanbali jurist and exegete Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE), encompassing the exegesis of the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth parts (juz's) of the Quran .
Background and Origin
The material forming the commentary derives from the educational circles and recorded lectures delivered by Ibn Uthaymin at the Grand Mosque in Unaizah over several decades of teaching . In addition to systematic exegesis classes starting from the beginning of the Quran and lessons based upon Tafsir al-Jalalayn, Ibn Uthaymin delivered extensive commentaries on the shorter chapters of the Quran (al-Mufassal) during general gatherings and instructional assemblies . These recorded lessons were subsequently transcribed, cross-checked against original recordings, and prepared for publication under the supervision of the Scientific Committee at the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation according to the editorial guidelines he established for his scholarly corpus .
Scope and Structure
The book covers two consecutive divisions of the Quran:
- Juz Qad Sami'a (Juz 28): Named after the opening phrase of Surah al-Mujadilah ( قَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ ), this section covers nine Medinan chapters addressing legal regulations, social order, and community affairs, concluding with Surah al-Tahrim .
- Juz Tabarak (Juz 29): Named after the opening phrase of Surah al-Mulk ( تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ ), this section covers eleven chapters concluding with Surah al-Mursalat, treating themes of eschatology, resurrection, divine power, and warnings to deniers .
Exegetical Method
Ibn Uthaymin's commentary is characterized by:
- Theological principles: Upholding Athari creedal positions by affirming divine attributes on their apparent, literal meaning without figurative reinterpretation (ta'wil) or denial, such as affirming God's real and comprehensive Hearing in the context of the opening of Surah al-Mujadilah .
- Extraction of rulings and benefits (istinbat al-ahkam wa-l-fawa'id): Systematically deducing legal points, moral admonitions, and theological lessons at the end of each verse or group of verses .
- Pedagogical categorization (al-sabr wa-l-taqsim): Organizing points into structured divisions and numbered lists to facilitate comprehension for students .
- Contextual and legal explanation: Detailing causes of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) alongside legal applications, such as the pre-Islamic practice of zihar and its expiations regulated in Surah al-Mujadilah .
