Tafsir al-Uthaymin: Luqman is a Qur'anic commentary on Surah Luqman by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE), transcribed from his audio-recorded lectures delivered in Unaizah .
Origin and Composition
The commentary originates from audio-recorded educational circles held every morning during summer vacations at Ibn Uthaymin's central mosque in Unaizah . These continuous exegesis classes started from Surah al-Nur and proceeded chronologically through subsequent surahs until verse 45 of Surah al-Zukhruf .
For this specific curriculum, the primary reference text studied by students in the circle was Tafsir al-Jalalayn, authored jointly by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH) and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH) . Ibn Uthaymin used it as a foundational guide for each verse, explaining and scrutinizing its wording without restricting himself to its brief annotations .
Method and Content
The work follows a sequential, verse-by-verse approach to Surah Luqman, addressing linguistic, legal, and theological points:
- Grammar and Syntax: Ibn Uthaymin begins with an extensive analysis of the Basmala, addressing its grammatical parsing, implicit governing verbs, and semantic rulings regarding its recitation .
- Disjointed Letters (al-Huruf al-Muqatta'a): Discussing the opening letters الم , he evaluates classical positions—including the stance in Tafsir al-Jalalayn that their meaning is known only to God—and adopts the view shared by Ibn Taymiyya and al-Zamakhshari in Tafsir al-Kashshaf: namely, that the letters have no standalone semantic meaning in Arabic, but serve to demonstrate the miraculous nature of the Qur'an composed of ordinary letters of the Arabic language .
- Lexical and Conceptual Exposition: He analyzes terms like الْكِتَابِ الْحَكِيمِ by explaining that al-hakim carries both the active meaning of possessing wisdom and ruling, as well as the meaning of being perfected (muhkam) .
Publication
The text was transcribed, compiled, and edited from the original audio recordings by the Scientific Department of the Sheikh Muhammad bin Saleh Al-Uthaimin Charitable Foundation in accordance with the editorial guidelines set by Ibn Uthaymin .
