Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Shura (Tafsīr al-ʿUthaymīn: al-Shūrā) is an exegetical commentary on Surah al-Shura by the Saudi Hanbali scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE) .
Origin and Composition
The work originated as audio-recorded teaching sessions delivered by Ibn Uthaymin in his grand mosque in the city of Unaizah every morning during summer vacations . These sessions formed part of an ongoing series of Quranic exegesis that began with Surah al-Nur and continued through subsequent chapters until reaching verse 45 of Surah al-Zukhruf .
Methodology and Approach
During his lectures on this series, Ibn Uthaymin used Tafsir al-Jalalayn—authored by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH) and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH)—as the foundational textbook in front of his students . Starting from its concise glosses, he provided expanded exposition of the Quranic text, elucidating linguistic and grammatical meanings, establishing creedal positions in accordance with the way of the Salaf, and methodically deriving theological, legal, and practical benefits (fawa'id) and rulings (ahkam) from each verse .
Publication
The transcription, preparation, and publication of the recorded commentary were carried out posthumously by the Scientific Department at the Shaykh Muhammad bin Saleh Al-Uthaymeen Charitable Foundation, following the guidelines and instructions established by the author for editing his scholarly heritage .
