Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Shuara is an exegetical commentary on Surat al-Shuara by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE) .
Origin and Scope
The work originated from audio recordings of daily morning study circles delivered by Ibn Uthaymin at his grand mosque in Unaizah during summer vacations . These lessons formed part of an ongoing commentary series that began with Surat al-Nur and extended sequentially through Surat al-Zukhruf up to the verse وَاسْأَلْ مَنْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رُسُلِنَا أَجَعَلْنَا مِنْ دُونِ الرَّحْمَنِ آلِهَةً يُعْبَدُونَ ("And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?") .
Method and Content
In delivering these lessons, Ibn Uthaymin took Tafsir al-Jalalayn as a primary textbook read aloud before the students, specifically the portion composed by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH) . Ibn Uthaymin systematically expands on al-Mahalli's concise glosses, examining them through linguistic analysis, Arabic grammar, and theological principles .
His commentary addresses introductory matters of the chapter, including the designation and naming of Quranic surahs, the criteria for classifying verses as Meccan or Medinan, and the numbering and order of verses . He also discusses exegetical questions such as the disconnected opening letters (al-huruf al-muqatta'a), evaluating various scholarly interpretations regarding their rhetorical and miraculous role in highlighting the divine origin of the Quran . Throughout the text, he extracts creedal, legal, and moral benefits (fawa'id) from the verses and evaluates transmitted reports .
Publication
The transcription, auditing, and publication of the recorded lessons were prepared by the Scientific Department of the Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation in accordance with the editorial standards set for publishing his scholarly legacy .
