Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Rum (Tafsīr al-ʿUthaymīn: al-Rūm) is an exegetical commentary on Surah al-Rum (the thirtieth chapter of the Quran) by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE).
Origin and Scope
The work originated as a series of audio-recorded lessons delivered by Ibn Uthaymin every morning during summer vacations at his grand mosque in the city of Unaizah. These lectures formed part of a larger ongoing exegesis series that commenced from Surah al-Nur and extended sequentially through subsequent chapters until reaching verse 45 of Surah al-Zukhruf.
Method and Sources
In conducting these lessons, Ibn Uthaymin utilized Tafsir al-Jalalayn, authored jointly by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH / 1459 CE) and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE), as the foundational textbook placed in the hands of attending students. Ibn Uthaymin's method consisted of quoting the concise glosses of al-Jalalayn, elaborating upon the meanings of the Quranic text, correcting or clarifying specific expressions used by the original exegete, and deducing theological, legal, and linguistic benefits from each verse.
Publication
The audio recordings of the lessons were transcribed, verified, and prepared for publication by the Scientific Department at the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation in accordance with the editorial guidelines set by the author. The foundation's preparatory work on the edition was dated 20 Jumada al-Akhirah 1436 AH.
