Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Qasas is a Quranic commentary on Surat al-Qasas by the Saudi scholar Ibn Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE), transcribed from his audio-recorded teaching sessions .

Origin and Publication

The work originated as part of daily morning lectures delivered by Ibn Uthaymin during summer vacations at the Grand Mosque in Unayzah . These sessions formed a sequential series of exegesis lessons starting from Surat al-Nur through Surat al-Zukhruf . The recorded audio lessons were subsequently transcribed, edited, and published in a single volume by the Academic Department of the Shaykh Muhammad bin Saleh Al-Uthaymeen Charitable Foundation, completed on 20 Jumada al-Akhirah 1436 AH .

Methodology and Content

The commentary covers the entirety of Surat al-Qasas across its 88 verses . Ibn Uthaymin's teaching method in this series took the classical commentary of Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli in Tafsir al-Jalalayn as an initial starting point, reading the baseline gloss for each verse or group of verses before expanding upon them .

Following the textual gloss, the author systematically derives and numbers legal, theological, and practical deductions under dedicated headings of textual benefits (fawa'id) . His approach combines linguistic and grammatical parsing with exegetical maxims, addressing questions of syntax, rhetoric, and Arabic usage alongside creedal fundamentals . Throughout the commentary, he emphasizes direct reliance on the Quran and the Sunnah, using the opinions of classical jurists as explanatory tools while drawing moral and spiritual lessons from the Quranic narrative of Moses and Pharaoh .
