Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Nur (Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-Karīm: Sūrat al-Nūr) is a Quranic commentary on Chapter 24 (Surat al-Nur) by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE), transcribed from his instructional lectures .

Origin and Scope

The work originated from audio-recorded teaching sessions held daily in the mornings during summer vacations by Ibn Uthaymin in his congregational mosque in Unaizah . These exegesis sessions marked the beginning of a continuous recorded series extending from Surat al-Nur through subsequent surahs up to verse 45 of Surat al-Zukhruf : وَاسْأَلْ مَنْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رُسُلِنَا أَجَعَلْنَا مِنْ دُونِ الرَّحْمَنِ آلِهَةً يُعْبَدُونَ ("And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?").

During these lessons, the students had Tafsir al-Jalalayn, authored by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH) and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH), as their standard study text, upon which the author elaborated .

Method and Content

The book proceeds verse by verse through the sixty-four verses of Surat al-Nur . The author's commentary focuses on linguistic analysis, theological implications, and extracting legal ordinances (ahkam) and moral benefits from the text . Key topics addressed include the prescribed legal penalties for fornication and false accusation of chastity (qadhf), the procedures of mutual imprecation (li'an), etiquette regarding seeking permission to enter private spaces (isti'dhan), rules of lowering the gaze, and modesty regulations .

Where certain passages lacked primary audio recordings in this specific lecture series, the editorial team supplemented the text from other recorded lessons or published treatises of the author . For instance, the explanation of the opening verse was drawn from his recorded commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, while the discussion on the second verse was taken from his legal compendium al-Sharh al-Mumti' .

Publication

The work was prepared, edited, and published by the Scientific Department at the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen Charitable Foundation (Mu'assasat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin al-Khayriyyah) in Saudi Arabia, with its first edition issued in Jumada al-Akhirah 1436 AH (2015 CE) .
