Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Nisa (Arabic: تفسير العثيمين: النساء) is a Quranic commentary on Surah al-Nisa (Chapter 4) by the Hanbali jurist and theologian Ibn Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE) .
Origin and Composition
The material for the book originated as audio-recorded lectures delivered by Ibn Uthaymin during his regular teaching circle held at his central mosque in the city of Unayzah . The lessons covering the exegesis of Surah al-Nisa spanned from Rabi al-Thani 1413 AH to Muharram 1417 AH .
Method and Content
The work provides a sequential, verse-by-verse exposition of Surah al-Nisa. At the outset, Ibn Uthaymin classifies the surah as Madinan, affirming the standard scholarly definition that Madani revelations are those revealed after the Hijrah and Makki revelations are those revealed prior to it, based on temporal rather than geographical criteria . He also contrasts the stylistic and thematic differences between Makki and Madani verses, noting that Madani passages generally feature longer, simpler phrasing addressing practical rulings such as commercial transactions, decorum, and legal permissions .
Throughout the exegesis, Ibn Uthaymin elucidates vocabulary, clarifies grammatical structures, and unpacks the legal implications of the text. Each verse or group of verses concludes with an enumerated derivation of doctrinal, jurisprudential, and moral benefits (fawa'id) .
Editing and Publication
To prepare the recorded lectures for publication, the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation commissioned Ibrahim ibn Muhammad Qasim al-Mayman to transcribe, verify, and edit the audio recordings into print form, following the author's editorial guidelines for his intellectual heritage . The Scientific Committee of the Foundation signed the introduction to the edition on 1 Muharram 1430 AH .
