Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Furqan (Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim: Surat al-Furqan) is an exegesis of Surat al-Furqan by the Saudi Hanbali scholar Ibn Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE), transcribed from his audio-recorded lectures .
Origin and Composition
The work originated as morning study circles held by Ibn Uthaymin during summer holidays at his mosque in the city of Unaizah . These sessions formed part of an audio-recorded series of Quranic commentary that began with Surat al-Nur and proceeded sequentially through subsequent chapters until reaching verse 45 of Surat al-Zukhruf . During these lessons, students had Tafsir al-Jalalayn—authored by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH / 1459 CE) and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE)—before them as the base text upon which Ibn Uthaymin commented .
Method and Content
The commentary proceeds sequentially through Surat al-Furqan, beginning with an extensive grammatical and linguistic exposition of the Basmalah . Ibn Uthaymin reads passages of Tafsir al-Jalalayn and evaluates them, supplementing or refining definitions he considers limited . For instance, commenting on the opening verse: تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي نَزَّلَ الْفُرْقَانَ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ لِيَكُونَ لِلْعَالَمِينَ نَذِيرًا "Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His servant that he may be to the worlds a warner" (al-Furqan: 1), he notes that glossing tabaraka merely as ta‘ala ("transcended") is incomplete, clarifying that it also denotes the abundance, expanse, and continuity of divine goodness .
Throughout the text, he focuses on:
- Linguistic and grammatical analysis: explaining morphological forms, particle functions, and semantic distinctions, such as between the divine names al-Rahman (denoting the inherent attribute of mercy) and al-Rahim (denoting the action of delivering mercy) .
- Theological principles: extracting creedal affirmations from the wording of verses, such as proving that the Quran is uncreated speech of God and deducing God's transcendence (al-‘uluww) from the verb nazzala .
- Derivation of benefits (fawa'id): extracting legal, ethical, and doctrinal lessons directly from the phrasing of each verse .
Publication
The text was compiled, edited, and prepared for publication by the Scientific Department of the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation (dated 20 Jumada al-Akhirah 1436 AH), following the author's guidelines and standards for publishing his scholarly heritage .
