Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-An‘am (تفسير العثيمين: الأنعام) is an exegesis of Surah al-An‘am by the Saudi Hanbali scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) .
Origin and Scope
The work forms part of Ibn ‘Uthaymin’s broader Quranic exegesis series, transcribed and compiled from his regular teaching circles and recorded audio lessons held at the Grand Mosque in ‘Unayzah . The text provides a comprehensive commentary on the verses of Surat al-Anam, the sixth chapter of the Quran, starting from its opening invocation through to its concluding themes .
Method and Content
Ibn ‘Uthaymin’s commentary adheres to a structured, analytical approach characterized by:
- Linguistic and Grammatical Analysis: The commentary examines sentence structure, grammatical dependencies (muta‘allaq), semantic nuances, and the derivations of individual words . For example, he analyzes the opening phrase al-hamd, examining the function of the definite article (al) as denoting exhaustiveness (istighraq), distinguishing between hamd (praising the praiseworthy for inherent and transitive perfection with love and veneration) and thana’ (repetition of praise), and rejecting alternative definitions .
- Theological Exposition: In line with Sunni theological principles, the commentary emphasizes the oneness of God (tawhid), His divine names and attributes, and the cosmic signs of divine creation . He discusses divine names such as al-Rahman and al-Rahim, defining al-Rahman as the possessor of vast mercy (dhu al-rahmah al-wasi‘ah) and distinguishing between God's general mercy toward all creation and His particular mercy reserved for believers .
- Legal and Practical Rulings: Ibn ‘Uthaymin routinely addresses legal issues (ahkam) connected to Quranic recitations and commands . In the introductory passages, he examines rulings pertaining to the Basmalah, arguing that it is an independent verse rather than part of Surah al-Fatihah, and stating that pronouncing the Basmalah in the middle of a surah is not legally recommended (ghayr mustahabb) based on Quran 16:98 .
- Derivation of Lessons and Benefits: A signature feature of the author's exegetical lectures is the systematic extraction of theological, moral, and pedagogical benefits (fawa’id) following the explanation of each verse .
Publication
The commentary was edited and prepared for publication posthumously under the supervision of the Ibn Uthaymin Charitable Foundation (Mu’assasat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-‘Uthaymin al-Khayriyyah), which oversees the preservation and dissemination of the author's scholarly legacy .
