Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Ahzab is an exegesis of Surah al-Ahzab by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE), transcribed from his audio-recorded teaching sessions .
Origin and Composition
The work originated as part of a series of morning exegesis circles held by Ibn Uthaymin in his grand mosque in Unayzah during summer vacations . These recorded lessons formed a continuous sequence that began from Surah al-Nur and proceeded through subsequent chapters of the Quran until reaching verse 45 of Surah al-Zukhruf . In conducting these lessons, Ibn Uthaymin relied on Tafsir al-Jalalayn—authored by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH) and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH)—as the base textbook read by the students .
Method and Content
The commentary addresses the 73 verses of Surah al-Ahzab in sequential order. It opens with an analysis of the basmala, discussing its grammatical syntax, linguistic derivations, and theological connotations, such as the distinction between the divine names al-Rahman and al-Rahim according to the analysis of Ibn al-Qayyim .
In treating the surah, Ibn Uthaymin quotes the concise phrasing of al-Mahalli from Tafsir al-Jalalayn and expands upon it . His method includes examining root meanings of terms, parsing sentence structure, addressing rhetorical questions and contextual commands—such as explaining the command of piety directed to the Prophet ﷺ—and deriving legal and creedal benefits .
Publication
The text was transcribed from the original audio recordings and edited for publication posthumously by the Scientific Department of the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation (مؤسسة الشيخ محمد بن صالح العثيمين الخيرية), adhering to the editorial directives and publication standards established by the author .
