Sunan Sa'id ibn Mansur – Takmilat al-Tafsir (The Completion of Quranic Exegesis from the Sunan of Sa'id ibn Mansur) is a classical compilation of exegetical hadiths and traditions (athar) by the traditionist Sa'id ibn Mansur (d. 227 AH / 842 CE), representing the newly recovered and edited continuation of the exegesis section of his broader work, al-Sunan .
Scope and Content
The author compiled al-Sunan to preserve legal traditions, prophetic reports, and the statements and legal verdicts of the Companions and Successors . Within this larger corpus, Kitab al-Tafsir constitutes the Quranic commentary section, arranged in the order of the Quranic text .
Takmilat al-Tafsir comprises the three volumes that complete the exegesis section of the manuscript, spanning reports 1178 through 2567 in the published series . It also includes the subsequent Kitab al-Zuhd (The Book of Asceticism), which forms the concluding book of Sa'id ibn Mansur's Sunan .
Transmission and Modern Publication
Al-Sunan was transmitted from Sa'id ibn Mansur primarily by his students Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Zayd al-Sa'igh and Ahmad ibn Najdah ibn al-'Uryan .
In modern print, portions of the work were published incrementally as manuscripts surfaced:
- Habib al-Rahman al-A'zami edited an initial portion containing the legal sections on inheritance (al-fara'id), bequests (al-wasaya), marriage (al-nikah), divorce (al-talaq), and military campaigns (al-jihad) .
- Sa'd ibn 'Abd Allah al-Humayyid subsequently edited the first part of Kitab al-Tafsir along with Fada'il al-Qur'an (Virtues of the Quran) across five volumes .
- The remaining portion, published as Takmilat al-Tafsir (forming volumes 6 through 8 of the edition), was prepared by a team of researchers under the supervision of Sa'd ibn 'Abd Allah al-Humayyid and Khalid ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Juraysi, and published by Dar al-Alukah in Riyadh in 1433 AH / 2012 CE .
