Sunan Said ibn Mansur: al-Faraid ila al-Jihad is the surviving third volume of the large hadith collection composed by the Meccan traditionist Said ibn Mansur (d. 227 AH / 842 CE), covering legal traditions from the chapters on inheritance through warfare .
Discovery and Manuscript
This section of the Sunan was preserved in an incomplete manuscript held at the Köprülü Library in Istanbul . It had long been misplaced because the library catalog listed the collection under the title Mishkat al-Masabih, while the spine of volume 439 was mislabeled as Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba . In 1380 AH, the scholar Muhammad Hamidullah identified the manuscript as the third volume of the Sunan of Said ibn Mansur while examining volumes in the library . Hamidullah transferred a copy of the manuscript to Muhammad Miyan al-Simlaki, who then passed it to the Indian hadith scholar Habib al-Rahman al-A'zami . The manuscript used for this edition was transcribed in the year 725 AH in Marj Dimashq .
The text is transmitted on the authority of Said ibn Mansur's student, the Meccan hadith scholar Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Zayd al-Sa'igh .
Structure and Contents
The work contains a total of 2,978 narrations, comprising prophetic hadiths alongside legal opinions and traditions (athar) of the Companions and Successors . The surviving portion is organized topically into several major legal books:
- The Book of Inheritance Shares (Kitab al-Fara'id), opening with the chapter encouraging the study of inheritance shares (Bab al-hathth ala ta'lim al-fara'id) .
- The Book of Bequests (Kitab al-Wasaya) .
- The Book of Marriage (Kitab al-Nikah) .
- The Book of Divorce (Kitab al-Talaq), which includes related rulings such as injurious assimilation (zihar) .
- The Book of Warfare (Kitab al-Jihad), which concludes this published volume .
Publication
Habib al-Rahman al-A'zami edited and annotated this portion of the Sunan, and it was first printed in two volumes by al-Dar al-Salafiyya in India in 1403 AH / 1982 CE . It was subsequently reprinted by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya in Beirut in 1405 AH .
