Sharh Riyad al-Salihin (Commentary on The Meadows of the Righteous) is a multi-volume hadith commentary by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE) on the renowned hadith compendium Riyad al-Salihin by Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (d. 676 AH / 1277 CE).
Origin and Composition
The commentary originated as a series of regular lessons delivered daily by Ibn Uthaymin after the afternoon prayer (asr) at the Grand Mosque in Unaizah. In his opening remarks, Ibn Uthaymin explained that he undertook the commentary because al-Nawawi's work is immensely beneficial both for inner spiritual rectitude and for outward bodily actions. Following the author's guidelines, the Scientific Committee of the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation subsequently transcribed, revised, and verified the text against the original audio recordings.
Methodology and Reception
Scholars count Ibn Uthaymin's commentary among the finest explanations of Riyad al-Salihin, characterizing it as lucid, accessible, and comprehensive (sahl mabsut). The commentary systematically addresses the thematic chapters and individual hadiths selected by al-Nawawi, analyzing their vocabulary, extracting legal and theological rulings, and elucidating moral and practical directives.
Publication History
The commentary was first published in 1415 AH (c. 1994–1995 CE) under the supervision and preparation of Dr. Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Tayyar. It has undergone several subsequent printings, including a six-volume edition published by Dar al-Watan under the direct supervision of the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation, an edition by Dar al-Basirah, and a first edition by Dar Ibn al-Jawzi in Cairo (1427 AH / 2006 CE).
