Sharh Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi - Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr

Sharh Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi (Commentary on Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi) is a contemporary Hanbali legal commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr (b. 1374 AH / 1954 CE) on the foundational legal primer Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi by Abu al-Qasim Umar ibn al-Husayn al-Khiraqi (d. 334 AH) .

Composition and Context

The work originated as a series of oral lessons delivered by al-Khudayr to students of Islamic law, which were subsequently transcribed and published across seventy-three lectures on his official website .

Al-Khudayr noted in his opening lecture that he had initially begun teaching Muntaha al-Iradat, but its combined complexity and length posed significant difficulties for beginner and intermediate students, with the explanation of a single folio in the section on ritual purification taking over three months . Following consultations with senior students and scholars, he resolved to switch to Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi because its phrasing is accessible and direct, and because it is the earliest primer in the Hanbali school . He also sought to revive engagement with this foundational text, as contemporary instruction had become largely confined to later treatises such as Zad al-Mustaqni', Umdat al-Fiqh, and Dalil al-Talib .

Method and Scope

In his commentary, al-Khudayr elucidates the legal rulings of the Hanbali madhhab following the structural arrangement of al-Khiraqi's primer, beginning with the Book of Purification (Kitab al-Tahara) and proceeding through the Book of Prayer (Kitab al-Salah) . His pedagogical approach includes:

  • Clarifying the exact wording of al-Khiraqi and noting manuscript variants when they affect legal interpretation .
  • Connecting the legal branches to scriptural proofs and comparative discussions, drawing extensively on classical commentaries on the primer, primarily al-Mughni by Ibn Qudama and al-Muqni' by Abu Ali Ibn al-Banna .
  • Highlighting issues that are unique to al-Khiraqi or omitted in comparison to later abridgments .
  • Answering practical and methodological questions posed by students during the course of the lessons .
