Sharh Kitab al-Siyam min Taqrib al-Asanid

Sharh Kitab al-Siyam min Taqrib al-Asanid ("Commentary on the Book of Fasting from Taqrib al-Asanid") is a contemporary hadith and legal commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr on the fasting section of Zayn al-Din Abd al-Rahim al-Iraqi's (d. 806 AH / 1404 CE) legal hadith compendium Taqrib al-Asanid wa-Tartib al-Masanid .

Background and Base Text

The base text, Taqrib al-Asanid wa-Tartib al-Masanid, was composed by al-Hafiz al-Iraqi for his son to facilitate hadith memorization . Al-Iraqi organized legal hadiths under classical jurisprudence chapters while restricting his selection to narrations transmitted through sixteen specific transmission chains recognized by hadith authorities as the most authentic (asahh al-asanid) . In classical scholarship, al-Iraqi commenced an extensive commentary on the work, which was subsequently completed by his son, Abu Zur'ah ibn al-Iraqi, under the title Tarh al-Tathrib fi Sharh al-Taqrib .

Structure and Content

Al-Khudayr's commentary consists of transcriptions of delivered audio lessons published through his official educational website . The work is organized into five numbered lessons corresponding to the parts of the fasting chapter :

  • Lesson 1: An introduction to Taqrib al-Asanid, its methodology, the linguistic and legal definition of fasting (siyam), and the scriptural evidence establishing its obligation .
  • Lessons 2–4: Detailed analysis of the legal hadiths concerning fasting, their chains of transmission, narrator reliability, and derived jurisprudential rulings.
  • Lesson 5: Rulings regarding spiritual retreat (i'tikaf), staying in mosques (al-mujawara), and the historical beginning of prophetic revelation (bad' nuzul al-wahy) .

Throughout the commentary, al-Khudayr explains the technical merits of the isnad structures compiled by al-Iraqi, elucidates the terminology of the hadiths, and extracts practical legal and devotional rulings .
