Sharh Kitab al-Ilm li Abi Khaythama - Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr

Sharh Kitab al-Ilm li-Abi Khaythama is a commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr on Kitab al-Ilm ("The Book of Knowledge") compiled by the early hadith scholar Abu Khaythama Zuhayr ibn Harb (160–234 AH / 776–848 CE) .

Background and Structure

The commentary originated as an intensive lecture series delivered over three days in a mosque setting and was later transcribed and published through al-Khudayr's website . The work is organized into seven lessons corresponding to the transcribed audio sessions .

In his introduction, al-Khudayr notes that Abu Khaythama's base text is not intended for deducing technical legal rulings (matin al-ilm), but rather falls into the category of motivational material and guideposts (mulah al-ilm) . The text brings together prophetic traditions and statements of early Muslim authorities (salaf) regarding the virtues of seeking religious knowledge, the etiquette of learning, and the importance of acting upon what is learned to foster God-consciousness (khashya) .

Method and Contents

Al-Khudayr begins the work with a biographical overview of Abu Khaythama, covering his lineage, birth year (160 AH), teachers, notable students—such as Muhammad al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj—and statements of critical evaluation by his contemporaries .

Throughout the commentary, al-Khudayr examines the transmitted texts by:

  • Analyzing the transmission chains (asanid) and the methodology of early compilers in citing their teachers and sources .
  • Evaluating individual narrators and discussing issues of reliability and weakness, such as identifying ambiguous narrators in the chains and noting corroborating reports for weak transmissions .
  • Clarifying linguistic and contextual meanings of the reports, accompanied by practical reflections and responses to student queries regarding study methodology, scholarship, and building personal libraries .
