Sharh Kitab al-Hajj min Bulugh al-Maram (Commentary on the Book of Pilgrimage from Bulugh al-Maram) is a legal and hadith commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd Allah bin Mani al-Ruqi (b. 1383 AH / 1964 CE) on the pilgrimage section of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's hadith collection Bulugh al-Maram min Adillat al-Ahkam .
Origin and Methodology
The work originated as a series of spoken lessons delivered across six gatherings held in Riyadh, which were recorded and subsequently transcribed and prepared for publication . The author characterized it as an intermediate-length commentary (sharh mutawassit) combining hadith-critical analysis (fawa'id hadithiyyah) and legal rulings (fawa'id fiqhiyyah) . In expounding the text, al-Ruqi drew extensively upon the explanations and scholarly insights of his teachers, Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz and Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin .
Contents
The commentary follows the sequence of narrations compiled in the pilgrimage section of Bulugh al-Maram, beginning with the chapter on the virtues of Hajj and the criteria for those upon whom it is obligatory (Bab Fadlihi wa-Bayan Man Furida Alayh) . In addition to textual and chain analysis (takhrij), the author discusses foundational jurisprudential topics surrounding the rites, such as determining the year Hajj was prescribed—identifying the 9th year of the Hijrah as the correct position—and the resulting legal question of whether its obligation is immediate (ala al-fawr) or deferrable (ala al-tarakhi) .
