Sharh Kashf al-Shubuhat wa Yalihi Sharh al-Usul al-Sitta (Commentary on "The Clarification of Doubts" Followed by Commentary on "The Six Principles") is a theological work by the Saudi scholar Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE), consisting of explanations of two doctrinal treatises by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1115–1206 AH / 1703–1792 CE) .
Overview and Contents
The volume brings together Ibn Uthaymin's commentaries on two foundational texts by Ibn Abd al-Wahhab that address key theological and practical tenets of Islam :
Commentary on Kashf al-Shubuhat
In his introduction, Ibn Uthaymin describes this work as a concise commentary (sharh yasir) on Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's treatise Kashf al-Shubuhat . The original treatise addresses and refutes over a dozen doubts raised by proponents of polytheism (shirk), answering them through scriptural evidence, clear phrasing, and accessible explanation . Ibn Uthaymin's commentary systematically follows the text, elucidating its arguments regarding monotheism (tawhid) and the refutation of misconceptions .
Commentary on al-Usul al-Sitta
The second part comprises an explanation of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's short treatise Sittat Usul 'Azima (The Six Great Principles) . Ibn Uthaymin provides line-by-line commentary on the six core principles outlined in the base text:
- Sincerity of devotion to God alone (al-Ikhlas) and clarifying its opposite, polytheism (al-shirk) .
- Unity in religion and the prohibition of division (al-ijtima' fi al-din wa-al-nahy 'an al-tafarruq) .
- Hearing and obeying legitimate rulers (al-sam' wa-al-ta'ah li-wulat al-amr) .
- Defining true knowledge and scholars, jurisprudence and jurists, and distinguishing those who merely resemble them (bayan al-'ilm wa-al-'ulama' wa-al-fiqh wa-al-fuqaha' wa-man tashabbaha bihim wa-laysa minhum) .
- Clarifying who the true allies of God are (bayan man hum awliya' Allah) .
- Refuting the Satanic misconception used to justify abandoning the Quran and the Sunnah (radd al-shubhah allati wada'aha al-shaytan fi tark al-Qur'an wa-al-Sunnah) .
Publication History
The combined work was compiled and prepared for publication by Fahd ibn Nasir al-Sulayman . It was published by Dar al-Thurayya in Riyadh (reaching its third edition in 1418 AH / 1997–1998 CE) .
