Sharh Hadith Jabir fi Sifat Hajjat al-Nabi (Commentary on the Hadith of Jabir on the Description of the Prophet's Pilgrimage) is a legal commentary by the Saudi Hanbali jurist Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (1347–1421 AH / 1929–2001 CE) that expounds the comprehensive narration of Jabir ibn Abd Allah concerning the Prophet's Farewell Pilgrimage .
Origin and Publication
The material for the book originally formed part of the regular teaching circles that Ibn Uthaymin conducted at the Grand Mosque in Unayzah, where he expounded the hadith collections Bulugh al-Maram and Sahih Muslim .
To provide readers with a focused and accessible manual on the jurisprudence of the rites of Hajj and Umrah as transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ, the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin Charitable Foundation arranged for the commentary to be published as an independent treatise . The Foundation assigned Musa'id ibn Abd Allah al-Salman to prepare the text for publication and verify its hadiths and historical narrations . The Foundation's scientific committee finalized the preface for its standalone release on 25 Shawwal 1424 AH, and the text was also incorporated into the author's collected works (Majmu' Fatawa wa Rasa'il al-Uthaymin) .
Contents and Method
The commentary focuses on the extended narration recorded in Sahih Muslim on the authority of Jabir ibn Abd Allah, considered by scholars to be the most comprehensive single account of the Prophet's pilgrimage from his departure from Medina until the completion of the rites . Ibn Uthaymin explains the hadith passage by passage, extracting practical legal rulings (ahkam), legal maxims, and spiritual lessons .
Among the topics addressed in the commentary are:
- The historical context of the pilgrimage in the tenth year of the Hijra and the reasons the Prophet ﷺ did not perform Hajj in earlier years .
- The regulations of entering the state of consecration (ihram) from the designated stations (miqat), ritual purification for women experiencing post-partum bleeding, and the wording of the talbiyah .
- The procedural acts of circumambulation (tawaf), running between al-Safa and al-Marwah (sa'i), prayers behind the Station of Abraham (Maqam Ibrahim), and recitation during the circumambulation prayers .
- The requirements for the validity of worship, emphasizing devotion (ikhlas) and strict adherence (mutaba'ah) to the prophetic example in performing Islamic rituals .
