Sharh al-Manzuma al-Bayquniyya - Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr

Sharh al-Manzuma al-Bayquniyya is a contemporary commentary by Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr on the poem on hadith terminology (mustalah al-hadith) by al-Bayquni.

Background and Structure

The base text, al-Manzuma al-Bayquniyya, is an introductory primer composed in the rajaz meter by Umar (also cited as Taha) ibn Muhammad ibn Fattuh al-Bayquni al-Dimashqi al-Shafi'i (d. ca. 1080 AH / 1670 CE), comprising 34 verses defining the essential classifications of hadith. The commentary by Abd al-Karim ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Hamad al-Khudayr consists of transcribed lectures published from his website, divided into four lessons.

Content and Method

The work begins with an exposition of the necessity of Islamic knowledge and its reliance upon the Quran and the Sunnah. Throughout the commentary, al-Khudayr explains each line of the poem in prose, elaborating upon the technical terminology used by hadith scholars. He details the primary divisions of transmission acceptance—including authentic (sahih), fair (hasan), and weak (da'if) reports—and clarifies classifications based on the point of attribution, such as narrations traced to the Prophet ﷺ (marfu'), statements of Companions (mawquf), and sayings of Successors (maqtu'). He also examines various forms of chain continuity and discontinuity, differentiating between categories of omission such as mursal, mu'allaq, mu'dal, and munqati'.
