Sharh al-Arbaeen al-Nawawiyya - Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr

Sharh al-Arbaeen al-Nawawiyya is an Arabic hadith commentary by Abd al-Karim al-Khudayr on the well-known collection of comprehensive prophetic traditions compiled by Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (d. 676 AH / 1277 CE).

Origin and Structure

The work originated as a series of oral lectures delivered by Abd al-Karim ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Hamad al-Khudayr, which were subsequently transcribed and published on his official website. The text is organized into fourteen recorded sessions, with each lesson corresponding to a section of the commentary:

  • Lesson 1: Covers the original introduction of al-Nawawi.
  • Lesson 2: Comments on the hadith on intentions ( إنما الأعمال بالنيات ) and provides an overview of various commentaries on the Forty Hadith, including al-Nawawi's own concise commentary.
  • Lesson 3: Examines the hadith defining Islam, Iman, and Ihsan.
  • Lesson 4: Treats the hadith on the five pillars of Islam.
  • Lesson 5: Focuses on the hadith regarding the rejection of religious innovations and wrongful acts.
  • Lesson 6: Discusses the hadith differentiating between the lawful, the unlawful, and ambiguous matters ( إن الحلال بين وإن الحرام بين ).
  • Lesson 7: Covers the hadith describing religion as sincere counsel ( الدين النصيحة ).
  • Lesson 8: Explains the hadith on fighting until the testimony of faith is established.
  • Lesson 9: Treats the hadith commanding the avoidance of prohibited matters and the performance of duties according to ability.
  • Lessons 11–13: Cover hadiths 13 through 24, including the comprehensive Hadith Qudsi narrated by Abu Dharr on divine justice and prohibition of oppression.
  • Lesson 14: Concludes the commentary by explaining the remaining narrations up to Hadith 42, opening with the hadith on asceticism narrated by Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi.

Method and Scope

The commentary follows an educational lecture format in which a student recites the text of the hadith, followed by al-Khudayr's detailed explanation of its wording, grammatical points, and legal and theological implications. Alongside textual analysis, the lessons incorporate interactive segments answering questions submitted by students, covering topics such as contemporary financial transactions, proper conduct in academic study, and specific points of Islamic jurisprudence.
