Sahih al-Sira al-Nabawiya (The Authentic Prophetic Biography) is a biographical study by the Jordanian scholar Ibrahim al-Ali (d. 1425 AH / 2004 CE), dedicated to compiling and arranging the events of the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strictly using authentic narrations from hadith literature .
Origin and Background
The impetus for the work came from a suggestion by the author's teacher, Hammam Abd al-Rahim Sa'id, a former professor of hadith at the University of Jordan . Sa'id observed a longstanding methodological divergence between early historians (ahl al-siyar), who were lenient in narrating weak or broken chains to preserve chronological completeness, and hadith specialists (muhaddithun), who applied strict chain criticism (isnad) even if it left gaps in the historical sequence . In his preface to the book, Umar Sulayman al-Ashqar noted that producing an authentic compilation from primary hadith collections met a critical scholarly demand to purge biographical literature of fabricated and unreliable accounts .
Methodology and Sources
The author followed a systematic framework in assembling and evaluating the biographical reports:
- Chronological Structure: Al-Ali adopted the chronological order established by Ibn Ishaq as transmitted in the abridgment of Ibn Hisham as his main structural baseline . However, whenever hadith sources established a differing timeline, he preferred the hadith chronology; for example, he placed the Expedition of Dhat al-Riqa' after the Battle of Khaybar rather than before it, relying on Sahih al-Bukhari as supported by Ibn Kathir, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, and Ibn al-Qayyim .
- Hadith Corpus and Selection: The book contains more than 900 hadiths . When multiple narrations existed, al-Ali selected the most comprehensive textual wording, prioritizing Sahih al-Bukhari, followed by Sahih Muslim, and then the Sunan compendia .
- Chain Criticism and Evaluation: Narrations outside Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim were subjected to hadith critical standards or evaluated based on the judgments of classical hadith authorities .
- Secondary Sources and Mursal Reports: When an event was not documented in standard hadith compendia, al-Ali consulted biographical works (kutub al-maghazi wa-al-siyar) and evaluated their chains . For historical events carrying no legal rulings where only a Successor's disconnected narration (mursal) existed, he recorded the report and evaluated the chain up to that Successor .
- Exegesis and Topical Headings: Al-Ali divided historical events under descriptive subheadings, explained rare and difficult vocabulary (gharib al-alfaz), and incorporated analytical and legal points extracted from classical hadith commentaries .
Publication and Reception
Sahih al-Sira al-Nabawiya was published in a single volume by Dar al-Nafa'is in Amman, Jordan, with its first edition appearing in 1415 AH / 1995 CE, followed by subsequent editions in 1416 AH and 1418 AH . The book has been cited and recommended among prominent contemporary works dedicated to authentic hadith-based prophetic biography, alongside Akram Diya' al-Umari's Al-Sira al-Nabawiyya al-Sahiha .
