Riyad al-Afham fi Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam (The Meadows of Comprehensions in Explaining the Pillar of Rulings) is a legal commentary by the Maliki scholar Taj al-Din al-Fakihani (654–731 AH / 1256–1331 CE) on the hadith collection Umdat al-Ahkam by Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (541–600 AH / 1146–1203 CE) .

Title and Purpose

In the introduction to the work, the author explicitly designated its title as Riyad al-Afham fi Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam, noting that he selected this name so that its expression would correspond to its meaning and convey its intended substance . On the cover of the manuscript preserved in the Sulaymaniyya Library, it was copied with a slight variation as Sharh Riyad al-Afham wa-Umdat al-Ahkam, which represents a scribal alteration . Al-Fakihani composed the commentary to train students and direct them toward critical inquiry, sound legal reasoning, and the methods of deducing legal rulings from prophetic texts and traditions .

Methodology and Sources

The book is distinguished as the first printed commentary on Umdat al-Ahkam to focus extensively on the jurisprudence of the Maliki school, as well as the first among its commentaries to place central emphasis on Arabic grammatical and linguistic subtleties . Al-Fakihani compiled his material from major hadith commentators across various traditions, including Abu Sulayman al-Khattabi, Abu Abd Allah al-Mazari, Abu Bakr Ibn al-Arabi, al-Qadi Iyad, Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi, and Taqi al-Din Ibn Daqiq al-Iyd .

A significant feature of the work is its preservation of quotations from classical texts that are either lost or remain in manuscript form, such as Rijal al-Umdah by al-Sa'bi, the commentary on Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili's al-Ahkam by Ibn Bazziza, and al-Bayan wa-l-Taqrib fi Sharh al-Tahdhib by Ibn Ata Allah al-Maliki . Within the commentary, al-Fakihani also frequently cites the statements of his own teachers, such as Ibn Daqiq al-Iyd, al-Mazuni, Abu Ali al-Bijai, and Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi, while cross-referencing several of his own writings, including his commentary on Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani's al-Risalah, his commentary on al-Tanqih, and al-Fawa'id al-Mukammilah fi Sharh al-Basmalah .

Reception and Transmission

The commentary became a key reference for later hadith commentators and jurists. Ibn al-Mulaqqin relied extensively upon it in his own commentary, al-I'lam bi Fawa'id Umdat al-Ahkam . Extensive excerpts and rulings from Riyad al-Afham were subsequently incorporated into major commentaries, including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Fath al-Bari, Badr al-Din al-Ayni's Umdat al-Qari, Badr al-Din al-Damamini's Masabih al-Jami, Shihab al-Din al-Qastallani's Irshad al-Sari, and al-Hattab's Mawahib al-Jalil .

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript copies of Riyad al-Afham are preserved in several collections, including the Khudabakhsh Oriental Public Library, the University of al-Qarawiyyin Library, the Sulaymaniyya Library, and the Al-Azhar Library . The text was edited by Nur al-Din Talib in collaboration with a specialized editorial committee and published for the first time in full based on three manuscripts by Dar al-Nawadir in 1431 AH (2010 CE) .
