Risala fi al-Dima al-Tabiiyya lil-Nisa (A Treatise on the Natural Bleedings of Women) is a legal treatise on Islamic jurisprudence authored by the Saudi jurist Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH / 2001 CE), addressing the legal rulings governing female physiology and purification .

Purpose and Methodology

The work was composed to elucidate the legal rulings concerning the types of vaginal bleeding experienced by women—namely menstruation (hayd), non-menstrual bleeding (istihada), and post-partum bleeding (nifas)—and to evaluate differing scholarly opinions . Ibn Uthaymin emphasizes deriving legal verdicts directly from the Quran and the Sunnah as the primary sources of legislation, asserting that where no explicit textual constraints exist, rulings must be tied directly to the actual occurrence and physical reality of the blood rather than artificial numerical limits . In determining these legal parameters, he frequently adopts the positions favored by Ibn Taymiyyah and al-Darimi .

Structure and Contents

The treatise begins with an introduction outlining its methodology and is organized into seven thematic chapters:

  • Chapter 1: The Meaning and Wisdom of Menstruation (Fi Ma‘na al-Hayd wa-Hikmatih), covering its linguistic and legal definitions and its physiological function .
  • Chapter 2: The Timing and Duration of Menstruation (Fi Zaman al-Hayd wa-Muddatih), addressing the age of onset, the absence of fixed maximum or minimum limits for its duration in days, and textual evidence against rigid numerical specifications .
  • Chapter 3: Irregularities and Changes in Menstrual Cycles (Fi al-Tawari' 'ala al-Hayd), discussing fluctuations such as increases, decreases, advanced or delayed timing, and variations in discharge .
  • Chapter 4: Rulings Pertaining to Menstruation (Fi Ahkam al-Hayd), examining prohibitions and obligations associated with the menstrual state in acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, circumambulation, and marital relations .
  • Chapter 5: Non-Menstrual Bleeding and Its Rulings (Fi al-Istihada wa-Ahkamiha), classifying the conditions of prolonged bleeding and the specific regulations for prayer and purification .
  • Chapter 6: Post-Partum Bleeding and Its Rulings (Fi al-Nifas wa-Ahkamih), defining post-natal bleeding, its maximum term, and rulings related to miscarriages .
  • Chapter 7: The Use of Medical Means (Fi Isti‘mal ma Yamna‘ al-Hayd aw Yajlibuh wa-ma Yamna‘ al-Haml aw Yusqituh), treating the legal status of substances used to induce or suppress menstruation, contraceptives, and abortion .

Publication

In addition to appearing as an independent monograph, the treatise was compiled into the eleventh volume of Majmu' Fatawa wa Rasa'il al-Uthaymin .
