Rihlat al-Fudala kama waradat biha al-Anba (The Journey of the Virtuous as Transmitted in the Reports) is a treatise by Abu Uways al-Kurdi (Ashraf ibn Nasr ibn Sabir al-Kurdi) detailing the historical tradition and accounts of traveling in pursuit of religious knowledge .

Composition and Context

The author compiled the work as an appendix (tadhyil) to his critical edition of al-Rihlah fi Talab al-Hadith (The Journey in Pursuit of Hadith) by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi . In his introduction to the text, the author noted that while modern means of travel have become significantly easier, those undertaking journeys in search of knowledge have dwindled, which prompted him to extract these accounts from his primary source material as an admonition and inspiration for contemporary seekers . The composition of the treatise was completed on 15 Muharram 1432 AH (January 2011 CE) .

Structure and Contents

The book is organized into five main chapters (abwab):

  • Chapter One: Covers the virtue of knowledge, traveling in pursuit of knowledge and scholars, undertaking journeys in one's youth, and journeying for the purpose of acquiring deep understanding in religion (tafaqquh fi al-din) .
  • Chapter Two: Recounts journeys of earlier nations, including the journey of the prophet Moses (peace be upon him) to meet al-Khadir .
  • Chapter Three: Collects the journeys of the Companions (Sahabah) to the Prophet ﷺ .
  • Chapter Four: Focuses on the journeys undertaken by the Successors (Tabi'un) to meet the Companions .
  • Chapter Five: Provides selected models and narratives of journeys made by the Successors and subsequent generations up to the era of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi .

Publication

The work was published alongside Abu Uways al-Kurdi's edition of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's text by Maktabat Ibn Taymiyyah in Egypt, directed by Abd al-Fattah al-Zayni .
