Nuzul al-Quran al-Karim wa Tarikhuhu wa ma yataallaq bihi (The Revelation of the Noble Quran, Its History, and Related Subjects) is a contemporary treatise on Quranic sciences by the Mauritanian scholar and professor Muhammad Umar Huwayh (b. 1373 AH / 1953–1954 CE), focusing on the history, nature, and facets of the Quranic revelation.
Author and Background
The author, Muhammad Umar ibn Abd Allah ibn Sidi al-Amin Huwayh al-Jakani al-Shinqiti, was born in Mauritania in 1373 AH. In his youth, he memorized the Quran and earned a chain of transmission (isnad) in the reading of Nafi al-Madani through both Qalun and Warsh. He also studied Ash'ari theology, Maliki jurisprudence, grammar, and Arabic philology in Mauritania. After reading and being influenced by the writings of Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti, he traveled to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage and study, where he studied Quranic exegesis (tafsir), creed, and logic directly under him, and served as one of the transcribers of his exegesis Adwa al-Bayan.
Huwayh obtained his undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Sharia at the Islamic University of Madinah, followed by a master's degree and a doctorate from the Department of the Quran and Sunnah at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca. His master's thesis was an edited critical edition of a section of Abu al-Muzaffar al-Sam'ani's Tafsir spanning from Surat al-Shura to the end of Surat al-Najm. He subsequently served as a professor in the Faculty of the Holy Quran at the Islamic University of Madinah, teaching exegesis.
Scope and Content
The work addresses foundational disciplines within the broader field of Quranic sciences (ulum al-Quran), specifically those centered on the history and mechanics of revelation. These topics encompass the modes and chronology of the descent of the Quran, its historical progression over the course of the prophetic mission, and related subjects investigated by Quranic scholars.
