Muhammad Umar Huwayh (b. 1373 AH / 1953 CE) is a contemporary Mauritanian scholar of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and professor at the Islamic University of Madinah.

Early life and education

Muhammad Umar ibn Abd Allah ibn Sidi al-Amin Huwayh al-Jakani al-Shinqiti was born in Mauritania in 1373 AH. In his youth, he memorized the Quran and earned an authorization (isnad) in the recitation of Nafi' al-Madani through both the transmissions of Qalun and Warsh. He initially studied Ash'ari theology, Maliki jurisprudence, grammar, and Arabic language in his home country. During his early studies, he read several writings of Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti and was influenced by them, which prompted him to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the pilgrimage and seek religious knowledge.

Upon arriving in Saudi Arabia, he attached himself to Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti, studying tafsir, theology, and logic under his instruction. He subsequently enrolled in the Islamic University of Madinah and graduated with a licentiate degree from its Faculty of Sharia. He then moved to Mecca to pursue postgraduate studies in the Department of the Quran and Sunnah at Umm al-Qura University, where he earned both his master's degree and doctorate. His graduate research was supervised by Muhammad Abu Shahbah, who commended his scholarship and stated that his academic level surpassed the requirements of both degree stages.

Teachers and students

Beyond Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti, his teachers included Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, Abd al-Muhsin al-Abbad, Abd al-Latif al-Qusaymi, Muhammad al-Mukhtar al-Shinqiti, Abu Bakr al-Jaza'iri, Hammad al-Ansari, and Muhammad Aman al-Jami. His students include Abu Ayyub Muhammad al-Awaji, Malfi al-Sa'idi, and Adil al-Juhani.

Career and scholarship

Huwayh served as a professor in the postgraduate department of tafsir at the Islamic University of Madinah, where he supervised and examined numerous academic theses in Quranic exegesis. He also traveled on multiple occasions to Mauritania to engage in religious teaching and advocacy centered on the Quran, the Sunnah, and early theological positions. His major academic writings include his master's thesis al-Khamr fi Daw' al-Kitab wa-al-Sunnah (Wine in the Light of the Quran and Sunnah) and his doctoral dissertation on the theological, legislative, and ethical foundations of Surat al-Najm (al-Usus al-I'tiqadiyyah wa-al-Tashri'iyyah wa-al-Akhlaqiyyah kama Tusawwiruha Surat al-Najm).
